One of the things I love about being a horse transporter is the variety I get to experience.
Just completed a trip that was packed with variety. From the Arizona desert to the mountains of Utah. Back down to Palm Springs and then the coast near San Diego before heading towards the enchanted state of New Mexico.
The weather was good even with some temperature changes. I loaded four horses at nearly 9000ft and 34 degrees one morning in Utah and a few hours later was running through Las Vegas where it was 70 degrees warmer! The horses travelled well and were dropped off that evening just north of Palm Springs where it was a cool 94 degrees.
Next day I ran down to the San Diego hills to pick up three that were heading to AZ and NM. Negotiating around the hills can get interesting with narrow roads and properties perched in some interesting places. The first horse was located at a barn that was tucked away down a hill. Not a problem – just low gear in and low gear out.
On to the next two. There was nowhere to turn around if I went to the property driveway. I was warned about this and decided the best and safest approach was to park in a wide spot in the road, across from a cul-de-sac I could back into, and walk the two horses out. It was about a 20-minute walk, and it was unknown how this pair would load. They hopped onto the trailer without any hesitation.
Next day dropped of the two walk out horses in northern Arizona and the other one in New Mexico.
With an empty trailer it was time to park up for the night before heading home next day. It was relaxed day heading home and included a green chili cheeseburger at Sparkies in Hatch, NM.
Next trip heads out the week of October 7 with the rig aimed at Colorado and Wyoming.
